Gilroy Dispatch: GilroyDispatch.com | GHS hires new girls' basketball coach

  • Objectivist · 5 months ago
Nobody should have taken the job. Make a parent take it. This is a no-win situation for a coach that is stuck with parents and students that are very undeserving.

Here is a realistic point of for you. The students are deserving. I played for Coach Jones and the only reason he is coming back is because there is a mass exodus from GHS to anywhere else. There are so many teaching spots available. Here is a dose of reality Coach Shapiro as good as she was, and she is probably would have been asked to step down anyway because Jones is a teacher. They always want teachers.

Coach Jones was uninformed about girls basketball, he was slow in the game and he did not relate well to any players. What a joke Flores. I agree the program should have been cancelled this season. It is comical how a teacher gets hired and given the job this fast. Good Luck Coach Jones dealing with the Fosters as long as you start Foster the whole season will be good...whatever this is a joke of a school.
  • concernedcitizen · 5 months ago
Hey here is an idea - any girl who doesn't want to play under the new coach should not try out. Then we will all know that those who do try out for the team and make it actually want to play together as a team and not just play for a coach who they've known forever. Jeez - what if Shapiro had quit to take another job - would none of these girls have played this year??? Either you want to play or you don't - it shouldn't be dependent on who the coach is. And some of these people keep forgetting that sports is just a side job to the main job of students - graduating from high school. I would doubt that any girl from Gilroy will make it as a professional ball player, so they really need to keep it in perspective. Play, don't play, whatever - just stop complaining already.
  • Fact Bringer · 5 months ago
I agree no one should have taken this job. The only one that will support Coach Jones is his family hold on tight to them because Ed Foster will be calling you soon to tell how great his daughter is. Hey Jones she belongs right where coach put her on the bench. So where are your ethics? Are you going to disrupt a whole program for one kid. Here is an idea bump up the grade point average to play to a 3.0 and you will lose both those kids.

    Stop copying me!

I am the original, the ONLY!

I just read most of these posts and they're...so childish.

You all deserve a spanking! But, I'm only in the mood to spank the ladies, so line up girls!

See, smiles and humor. The sky isn't falling, adults are just acting like spoiled brats. Nothing new here. On ALL sides. SO STOP IT!

The article is inaccurate Don Anderson and Mike Warren were the head coach. Jones was never the head. He has not coached High School Varsity in who knows how long. So anyone wondering why the heck he is coming back to Gilroy? I forgot because we as a district are desperate for teachers and he happens to know what a basketball is.
  • alumni · 5 months ago
Actualy Coach Jones was a great girls basketball coach! I had the honor to play for him for 2 years! Great Coach! So glad your Back Jones!!!.. Hey buddy with the comment.. do your research before commenting!.. you look like an idot!!
  • Please · 5 months ago
Dear Alumni I am sure you are Alumni from Gilroy. These coaches were the coaches in Colrorado. Well if he brings discipline he will have to wait till Foster leaver or he cuts her where she belongs, cut. You can't tell Foster what to do.
  • Name · 5 months ago
Unfortunately.. I do not know the Fosters.. I’ve heard she is a good player with a Bad attitude and have crazy parents. But from reading all these blogs... Sounds like She needs a reality check.. if she plans to go anywhere to play, i guarantee you college coaches will not put up with bad attitudes. .. . Besides, Jones doesn’t put up with that! So i hope the fosters get their act strait.

Well I guess MaxPreps has it wrong...here is what it says on their page:

    Burlington Cougars High School Basketball
    Coach:Tim Jones
    Colors:Red, Black
    League:2A/1A Union Pacific
    StateColorado

They made it to the State championship under him, so he's no slouch. And my neighbor (now out of college) played under him at GHS when he was the varsity coach. He was supposedly a good teacher too - I don't know because my kids aren't in high school yet. The point is - I keep seeing on these blogs how people make stupid claims and lies, then when they are proved wrong, they never do a mea culpa. If you don't know the facts, don't present them as facts. When you are just stating opinion - be honest enough to say that it's your opinion. I don't know what happened between the Fosters and Shapiro, but I will say that it is probably better to have a full time teacher coaching IN MY OPINION.
  • Jim · 5 months ago
I couldn't agree with you more, a full time on campus teacher is much more preferable in my opinion.
  • Disturbed · 5 months ago
Are you kidding me it took the district 8 months to find some coach not guilty. Now they hire some teacher who is running away from God knows what in a week who happens to be familiar with basketball. Flores you are a screw up. Typical GHS who cares about sports lets get in some teacher who is worthless. Watch out Jones you better make sure you don't have that Foster kid in your classroom and on the court. Lisa and Ed Foster will own you. Maybe you are already bought who knows.
  • alumni · 5 months ago
Coach Jones is great ! He teaches Discipline .. Respect and Hustle… Its about time they did something good!

I know Jones. I like Jones. He had great success when he was last at GHS with girl's basketball. I wish him all the luck in the world. He is going to need it.
  • OMG · 5 months ago
Darn, what am I going to do with my spare time now that this is over? Maybe someone could start a new chatroom where the debate can continue. I don't have a life, so debating this matter is the only thing I have. Darn you GHS for attempting to end this controversy!
  • Joe · 5 months ago
Hey, “OMG” if you want to continue your involvement. You can usually find Coach Shapiro at coffee house in Gilroy. She will be the one wearing a college coaching shirt because that is where she is at now, working for a college. Great job Fosters we all knew she was moving on to college we wanted her for a few more years here. Way to speed that up.
  • Tom Branigan · 5 months ago
All teachers and coaches at GHS have been put on notice that the must comply with all parent and student requests for grades and playing time. No teacher is authorized to fail a student and no coach is allowed to cut a player. If any parent/child claims racism/sexism/religious discrimination, etc. the teacher or coach will be fired and have their credential pulled by Flores regardless of any merit to the claims.

Flores has instituted a "No tolerance" policy for any teacher or coach to upset a parent or child. She demands that the teachers and coaches view parents and children as customers and to give them whatever they want.
  • GHS Alumni · 5 months ago
I hate to say this on here, but I see too many people giving him props. Jones was not a good coach, nor a good teacher. I can sure attest to that since I was a player of his as well as a student. He was very egotistical, and very shady to players behind their backs.
  • Can't we all get along · 5 months ago
Come on have some class. Is this really necessary? Now the bad mouthing is starting before the season even begins.
  • Jim · 5 months ago
Maybe coach Jones could mentor coach Shapiro as an assistant!
  • Diane · 5 months ago
Listen Ernestina everyone has had enough of you bashing Coach Shapiro...you are not Jim, please you are a woman, or do we need to remind you? So sick of the bashing, from what I hear Coach Shapiro is involved with a college based on a letter a friend of mine said she sent to her players and supporters. So I do not think Jones or anyone in this town will be mentoring her. Get over bashing her and just sit in your house and plot against someone else.
  • Alumni 2 · 5 months ago
I had this Jones as a teacher and a player and yes I agree he bashed players behind their back. Whatever we can leave it alone but wait till he deals with Fosters extra activities like partying during the season. Whatever Flores you are a joke. Bring back Diaz he was better and a morale basis.
  • Jim · 5 months ago
I have not said anything bad about coach Shapiro! However, why can't I be allowed to be excited over the newly hired Coach Jones. If there is a problem in this town, it is that some people have a hard time being positive as well as supportive. I gladly welcome a non biased coach. I believe from his track record that he will be a great asset to the young women @ GHS. Coach Jones this town needs to get behind you 100%. I pledge my support to you sir. Deborah Flores you are a very intuitive, inspiring, leader. God bless you!
  • Tenacious D · 5 months ago
It is clear that Jim and others like him will defend the firing of an employee when the employee has done nothing wrong.

It would be fair to say that all employees of GUSD can now be fired at will if any parent doesn't like a decision of the teacher or coach. Good luck teachers and coaches in attempting to have discipline on your teams or in your classrooms. People like Jim, the district and the school board will fire you if you upset the children or parents with your god-awful discipline.

The children have now taken over the schools.
  • Diane · 5 months ago
    Jim,
You do not support Jones as much as you dislike Shapiro. Now at my home I have other members of our team parents and this is a joke. Jim(Ernestina) please just stop. We know you are playing both sides of the fence. As for Coach Jones all we know is what past players have said and that he talks bad behind his player's back. Guess what we all have our complaints written and a lawyer willing to take the case against him the first time Foster starts and our kids do not. You know why because it will not be fair. Now we have that right due to the door Flores opened. So take that jimmy and suck on it.
Sorry Tim Jones this is not the battle you should have entered.
  • Parent · 5 months ago
This forum is crazy. My daughter played on the Varsity last year. I loved Coach Shapiro. This is the bottom line and I believe I speak for everyone but the Fosters and the Steeles. If Lindsey is now a starter before not only my daughter but many others it will only be because of the lawyer the Fosters have. We all know and not to be hurtful but Laura got beaten out of her spot and sat out for four months with an ankle injury. Steele really did get replaced due to injury. Foster on the other hand is not a starter and she is out of control with her team. Many of the girls do not feel it is right that she should still be in the program, much less start. So no I do not have my complaint written. I can tell you I will sure be skipping the Athletic Director and Principal and taking my complaint staraight to Flores with a lawyer. There are so many good girls in the program and yes they are hurt and said some mean things. They have every right to be angry. Lindsey Foster has parents that paid for her to be a starter but she will never be a star because her heart is really poisoned to selfishness.
Coach Jones your character is on the line. You could have a great team but get rid of the problems from the start. There was comment earlier on here that stated move the grade point average to at least a 3.0 and you will lose all the headaches.
  • Jim · 5 months ago
    Parent,

The comments you have made are exactly why Coach Shapiro is no longer at GHS. "Raise the grade point average" so you can ostracize a player or players that you don't want on the team. It has nothing at all to do with your concern over your players grades, its all about your excuse to do what you want. Evil.
  • Joe · 5 months ago
No Jack a** , raise the GPA to get rid of two headaches. There were 11 girls on the Varsity who had a 3.85 and everyone on the JV except had 4.0 so who are you kidding? What players are the norm. Raising the GPA was not Shapiro's idea. but it is a good idea....ok JIMMY
  • Jim · 5 months ago
    No Joe,

You missed the point. Whether grades, or attending a religious event, or even a trip to the moon, it still was an excuse for the coach to do her own will. She got caught, and faced the consequences. Its not mine or anyone elses fault, she chose to do it. Stop blaming the Fosters, Steeles, Flores, and now Coach Jones or anyone else. Too many people are so quick to excuse people when they do wrong. The truth is people who excuse others in their wrong doings, are guilty people as well!
  • Tenacious D · 5 months ago
Next year all the students will have a 4.0 GPA and every kid will make the team and every kid will get equal playing time. Kids that don't show up for practice will be given preferential treatment so that the coach is not accused of 'retaliation.'

This is the utopia that idiots like Jim and the district would like to see and are enforcing. They fire teachers and coaches that hold the line.

You what I find most amusing is how will anyone know if Foster made the team because she earned it or not. All of us in the know, know exactly what the parameters were for Shapiro to come back. She could not cut Foster or Steele and they must play. I watched a good number of games and the Steele kid could not make a shot at 6'2" under the basket to save her life. When she goy hurt she was easily replaced by a great transfer kid. The Foster kid she is out of control and a terrible team player. I have coached basketball for years and Foster you would have grabbed pine for me. You are not the player your dad thinks you are. You deserved to be cut next year just because of the ruckus you caused. Coach Shapiro did a great job controlling the Foster kid.
As a coach and a father Ed Foster you are a terrible example of what a parent should do. In my opinion.
  • Cindy · 5 months ago
My kids went to school when Mr. Jones was a teacher. This is not a great move more of a desperate move. GHS has had so many good teachers leave that they will take anyone back. So why is Jones coming back from Colorado? What happened at his last job? Mr. Jones you are not a good fit at GHS. You had so mnay issues why now in a time of turmoil. As for the basketball job, I remember my daughter was friends with your players. They were not pleased with you. There needed to be strong leadership and control. This girls needed a strong hand. You are very deceitful with individual players. You will not get away with old tactics those Fosters will be up there taping you, listening and interogating their daughter after each practice.
  • baumsquad · 4 months ago
Cindy, It is very unfortunate that you think this is the appropriate forum to attack a public employee...or anyone for that matter. I have had the great pleasure to work / coach with Mr. Jones. He is nothing but a professional and always puts the kids first. If I had to choose someone to come in and help create a positive environment and rid all of this negativity that has developed because of all involved, it would be Mr. Jones. I am thouroughly disappointed in all who are participating negatively in this discussion. Especially Alumni, Cindy and The Dispatch. How can you (cindy) be so vengeful and spiteful towards someone who hasn't even been on the job one day? And to you Dispatch, you have the power to stop this... why do you allow this type of negativity and hurtful behavior? (that was a rhetorical question) I know why, to sell papers and make a profit What are we teaching our children by being so judgemental and hurtful? Aren't we supposed to be role models? Jesus is the only perfect being on this planet... All of us make mistakes everyday of our lives... Stop judging... By the way Cindy, to answer your question on what happened with Mr. Jones last job, he won a STATE CHAMPIONSHIP! Not just a league title, or a sectional but a STATE CHAMPIONSHIP! And he did it with honor and respect towards all... If you (Cindy) need to say something to Mr. Jones, maybe you should call him and meet with him instead of using this forum which is dripping with disgusting behavior...
  • Tenacious D · 5 months ago
Flores has just endorsed anarchy at the high school. The worse the behavior of the parent and child, the better their chances that they will get whatever they want. This is not the only incident of outrageous behavior being rewarded at the high school. Other parents go out of their way to be offensive and then threaten the teacher if the teacher reacts in any way.

This is how the game is played:
    1. Kid is caught cheating, talking, texting, etc.
    2. Teacher writes kid up and calls home
    3. Parent defends kid and claims that the kid and the teacher just have a bad relationship.
    4. Parent goes off on teacher and then puts the teacher on notice that any action towards the child will be seen as retribution
    5. Teacher is then handcuffed and knows that the administration, district office and school board will view the teacher as the cause of the conflict.

This goes on all the time. The parent plays the drama queen and admin puts pressure on the teacher just to shut up the parent.

Don't worry Jim is actually Ernestina, the Jim name is one of 35 aliases they use. It is ridiculous. This whole coaching thing is a joke. Good luck Jones, Lindsey Foster does not belong anywhere on that court. If she is on it, it will be because you are willing compromise what is right for $2300.00...totally wrong.

We thought this was the best place as any. We already have 20 photos of Foster out at parties etc. Anyone who has any photos of Foster give them to any ex player on the team we are collecting them to send to like 40 athletic departemnts so they know exactly what she is with all the news clippings etc. This truth will be heard..we are done with you Lindsey. This was an injustice but yea even your friends told us who is interested in you...till they get your grades which we know that too. So sick of what you think you got away with....NOT
  • normalparent · 4 months ago
Teenagers going to parties - OMG!!! Call CNN - this is definitely breaking news...

What the is wrong with these jilted team members and their families. They just don't get it - there was never a guarantee that Ms Shapiro or anyone in particular was going to be the coach next year. Coaches who are not teachers are hired as at-will employees, they have a one season at a time position in the school. There is no job guarantee..nada...zip...nothing.

And enough with the "let's make a rule about who can play based on GPA". There already is a rule. You need to have above a 2.0 average. Sorry parents, your faux geniuses are going to have to learn to play on teams alongside average students.

Just because some of the players and their parents liked the pool parties and bible thumping that Ms Shapiro and her husband seemed to integrate into the GHS high school basketball program doesn't make that part and parcel of playing a high school sport. My son plays a sport in middle school, and I can assure you, his teacher/coach doesn't have the team over for swim parties and sleepovers. They get one end of the season party at a pizza place.

I've read some of the information from several teammates, and I would have fired this coach for crossing into territory that goes beyond the scope of her job. It amazes me that these parents would be comfortable with these girls hanging around the homes of their teachers? Are teachers allowed to fratenize with students in Gilroy (if so that is not a good policy). Would parents want their 16 year old daughter spending the night at their Math teachers home? What if the coach or teacher was a male? We can't have one set of behavioral standards for teachers (since so many people here are equating the role of the coach to that of a teacher...) and than break the standard for one coach who "really loves" her girls.

Do you want to know why I think this coach is not coming back? I have seen the myspace/facebook pages of several basketball players along with the comments Coach Shapiro wrote to them; Coach Shapiro sent this message to one of the players on April 12, 2009 "wanna come live here this week so I can get outty my house..." Maybe Debbie Flores saw that too and decided that Shapiro crossed a line.

Please - I am begging one of the Gilroy High teachers to respond to this (or Jack Daley or Fred Tovar or anyone else who thinks that its a good policy to have coaches and teachers invite students to come and live with them....)
  • Billy Bathstone · 4 months ago
I am not surprised that GHS parents are fine with students drinking. I remember a few years back when the football players were doing drugs and drinking at a parent's house with the parents there and some kids jumped from the roof and broke his foot. The parents were supplying the alcohol. The following year there was a mandatory meeting of all parents with children in sports in order to tell them that it is not alright to have parties with drugs and alcohol for minors. PARENTS in Gilroy needed to be taught that. Sad, but true.
  • Goodstudentsmom · 4 months ago
I hope no one is alleging drug use - lots of high school kids go to parties and don't drink or do drugs. My daughter is 16 and goes to high school - she has had several parties over the past few years without drugs and alcohol. If the team is now accusing the Foster kid of drug or alcohol use, they better be careful....that is definitely sure to provoke a response from the new coach and the Foster family.
  • Basketball Parent · 4 months ago
So are you suggesting the new coach and the Fosters are hand in hand? Drugs and alcohol should concern the teachers, the parents, the coach new or old, the administration etc. Are we clear?
  • Goodstudentsmom · 4 months ago
I am not suggesting that the coach and the Foster know each other - what I am saying is that someone is saying that Miss Foster goes to parties - they have pictures of her at parties. So what??? There is a huge leap between a teenager going to parties and a teenager abusing drugs/alcohol.

If someone said that my daughter went to parties, that would be a true statement. She doesn't do drugs and alcohol and she and her friends take pictures with their phones and cameras at all the parties we have.

Billy Bathstone is the one who suggested that GHS parents approve and provide alcohol for high school students. He gave one example. I think that was a poor choice to use, because my daughter and her friends all have parties and do not drink or use drugs.

My point is that no one should start accusing Miss Foster of drug/alcohol abuse. I would imagine that the Foster parents would be angry at the unsubstantiated rumors and the coach would be angry at potential team members who are trying to sabotage one of the other team members. None of these people seem very clear-headed to me. They are all very immature.

How about I respond as the player she said that to you freak. I am out of high school and the coach and or her husband offered me a place to live since I do not have parents. This is probably Earnestina AGAIN. As a player I can not remember the last time the coach ever had players at her house except back in 2006 for a team bonding evening where like 3 other parents were there as well.
Now we all know you Ernestina may not believe in God and thats ok. As you know every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.....no worries you are not the exception. As for the coach opening her house ...the Fosters were there more than anyone. You do not like that because even the Fosters don't like you because of stuff like this.
As for the parties no its not a newsflash but college recruiters well lets just say they do not like high school girls partying and lets just say of the photos that I have seen are not very respectful. So whatever happens there it does. I for one am off to a great school. The coach and her guidance always kept me on track. That is how it is whether she coaches or not. You (Ernestina) are just jealous because Coach has always be been better than you in everything.

Whats weird is that you look at all our facebooks and myspaces looking for creepy things , who is the weirdo?....and if by chance this is Lisa or Tina well you already know what I think there...

Dear retarded parent I was at the home when there was a team bonding night at the coaches house. I was at the second team bonding at at the assistant coaches house. You are out of line and just plain ignorant. As for Alana, I am sorry dear that you are on here defending yourself again. To the Parent who refers to herself as normal. You are so stupid for writing things without knowing the history. This child you speak so boldly about was raised in foster care. She found a home and comfort through sports and yes was guided by Coach Shapiro. Yes she was offered to live with them, the coach also opted many different times to just adopt her. This is a special circumstance one you know nothing about. If this is Lisa or Tina or Ernestina I can not think of something more childish than bringing a child into your hatred. Alana is right you need a relationship if not with God than seek counseling quickly.

As for the relationship this coach had with these players whether she is coaching or not all of will still have this coach a part of our daughters lives. Her guidance is amazing to them. You will never know this because you enjoy the gossip side of life which we all despise..
  • normalparent · 4 months ago
Well now I am really confused - on June 11, 2009 Gary Cates posted the following on the Dispatch blog:

Let me make this crystal clear. Neither I nor Susan has any hatred towards Lindsey. And although I am upset at what is going on, I can forgive and so can Susan. If Jesus can forgive us of our sins, who are we to not offer forgiveness. Lindsey and all of the other girls came to all of our kids birthday parties, barbecues, dinners, played in the jump houses and chased everyone around with silly string and eggs, including me. Everyone was happy and that was only last year, what happened?

Nos Alana is claiming the team only was at the coaches house in 2006. Gary claims the whole team went to all the kids parties, barbecues and dinners in 2008. Who is telling the truth here? Which good Christian is not being honest?

Get your stories straight folks...I based my belief that this coach stepped over the line on her husbands proclamation that the team was partying it up at the Cate/Shapiro house on a fairly regular basis.

And again, I didn't bring Alana's name up -she did. I kept it anonymous, just to point out that coaches and or teachers shouldn't be inviting students to live with them.
  • Gary Cates · 4 months ago
Dear Normal Parent, I feel sorry that your life is so empty of love and compassion that on a Sunday morning, instead of making breakfast for your children and planning a family outing, or going to church, you feel the desire to wake up and insult people. In response to your question, Alana has always been welcome at my home, for one day or one year. She is a wonderful girl who has overcome extreme adversity to become who she is today. And the coach has had a profound impact on her (read the Mercury News Article from a month ago). She is a 4.0 student, graduated high school as a junior and received a full ride scholarship to a California University School. She is bright, confident, loves the Lord and is a very motivated and determined individual who will go far in life. We love Alana, and she will always have a special place in our hearts. Is she emotional, of course she is, what teenager isn’t? As it is for many of these children, losing their coach, the one they have had since 7th grade, was a big deal, and you should have some compassion for them. As for the coach, she has already moved forward and set her sights on new goals, and the relationship she shares with the families and players remains, and she will still have a positive impact on them.

P.S I am more than willing to debate you on any issue, in this forum or face to face, but can you confine your comments to one article or the other, responding twice seem a little redundant.
  • Gary Cates · 4 months ago
I can barely keep up with you. Look, God has blessed us with a beautiful home, more than large enough for three teams. We are very giving and love to share with others so when we have an opportunity to do something nice for people, team included, we open our home. Birthday parties, BBQ, dinner, a place to stay when needed, it really doesn’t matter, “mi casa, su casa” (not you, but you get the point). We live our lives as an open book, what you see is what you get, no secrets, no pretention, we are just your normal, God fearing, bible thumping, gun toting, conservative republicans who believe that right is right and wrong is wrong, a matter of virtues, handed down by God and not subjective to your individual wants or desires. Regardless of what side of the fence you fall on regarding this Foster issue, our individual character is not in question, at least not by those who know us.

    Gary, Gary, Gary,

You don't have to keep telling us how good of people you are. One needs to look no further than those followers of yours who continue to bash two families who fealt they were wronged. Is there any truth to anything they have said? Or are they all lies? I just cannot believe that this whole mess was about playing time only. I can tell you that its NOT about playing time. Lindsey Foster fealt and feels betrayed by not only her teamates now but her coach as well. You as a christian cannot possibly endorse this rhetoric about these two families. You need to publicly denounce this trashing of these two families now! Do it! I will respect you for it.
  • Gary Cates · 4 months ago
Jim, we have covered this. I do not hate the Fosters or the Steeles, I do not respect them but for that matter I do not respect you. Just as you have incited this topic with your lies, half truths and negative comments, hiding under false names and taking cheap shots to satisfy some twisted agenda the Fosters and Steeles did the same to achieve their own agenda, be it more playtime for their kids, revenge over some perceived hurt, attention or just to satisfy their own twisted agenda. Regardless of the reason, yes, they lied, you know it, the school board knows it, Flores, Daley, Maxwell and everyone else who knows the facts of this matter. I would never give the Fosters or the Steeles an easy out by saying that their feelings were real and they just felt betrayed, that would just be another lie.

    Gary,

So let me see if I get this right. The Fosters, Steeles, Maxwell, and Flores are all lying, and you Gary Cates are telling the truth, is that correct? Are you saying this whole ordeal is a conspiracy against the Coach?
  • Parent · 4 months ago
As a parent in the program you JIM whatever your last or first name is finally has it. Yes it was all political because it came down to money. The district told the coach that the city of Gilroy could not afford a lawsuit and why she does not print that letter I do not know. The reality is the lawsuit by the Fosters would be avoided if the coach stepped down...Now do you get it. Please stop bothering this family.
  • SpeakingUp · 4 months ago
The City of Gilroy has absolutely no connection to the school district; they are two distinct agencies. Please refrain from confusing the two; people have suggested on these blogs that "we should complain to the Mayor and City Council..." Gilroy School District is the only public entity that could have been sued.
  • Gary Cates · 4 months ago
You have obviously taken everything you have read out of context and created your own opinion. Learn the facts, get it in order and then get back to me. Thanks
  • SpeakingUp · 4 months ago
There is no chance that anyone in Gilroy Unified School District would have told the coach that the City of Gilroy can't afford a lawsuit as it pertains to your wife. The District is well aware that their employees have no connection to the City of Gilroy.
Several of the team players and supporters have been erroneously suggesting a meeting with mayor, etc... I am merely pointing out that the right place for them to go would be the School District or School Board.
  • Some Parent · 4 months ago
Jim you are very rude. I do not believe Mr. Cates or anyone feel the Maxwell, Daley or any of those in administration lied. They did not handle this correctly but they did not lie. Flores just weighed the odds and rolled the dice if Shapiro did not come back the lawsuit would be over. She is probably assuming that because Shapiro is a Chrsitian she would not sue and move and and the district saved money.

Why are you always saying you are not rude when in fact you are. Now the whether the Fosters still sue or Shapiro sues them who knows. Odds are everyone gets sued. Stop making such a huge deal out of simple facts. For the record this was about playing time. That may be hard to swallow but I was there I watched the atmosphere the night their kid did not start.
  • Gary Cates · 4 months ago
    Jim,

What I have said is that the Fosters and Steels have lied throughout this entire situation. I do believe that Superintendent Flores is a Statist, who believes in pushing equality, rather than offering equal opportunity, which was evident by the parameters she set down regarding mandatory selection of both Lindsey Foster and Laura Steele, mandatory play time, regardless of performance. Had Susan remained the coach, those were going to be the requirements. Flores placed no importance whatsoever on the wants or desires of the other eleven players, their parents or others in the community that supported Susan. Flores was only concerned about quieting this issue and lacked the leadership to stand on principle or values, opting to allow her liberal attitude to dictate rather than common sense. With regards to James Maxwell, he was leaving to another school long before this happened and was not going to get his hands dirty or get too involved in any controversy. I will say that he was upset that Superintendent Flores ignored his recommendations to quash this issue because the complaints were baseless and he was able to see this as a lie. I will note that I believe this was the fifth or sixth complaint the Fosters have made about coaches and teachers, not just Susan, but since you only know what you have read, you wouldn’t be aware of that. The school paid a lot of money and interviewed over fifty people to come to the conclusion that the Coach Shapiro had done anything wrong, which will again be evident when the coach sues both the Fosters and Steeles for defamation of character and slander, and yes she is suing, but that is another matter.
  • SpeakingUp · 4 months ago
Gary, you are digging the hole deeper for your wife every time you post....Someone who knows him should get him away from the keyboard.

I am a paralegal and I can see that your wife clearly has no grounds for suing the school district. The district simply chose not to rehire your wife, and they are under no obligation to do so. I have no doubt you will be able to find a lawyer to take your case and waste your money, but you will not prevail in a suit against the Fosters or Steeles. Your own writings suggest that your wife was going to cut these two players, which was one of the allegations made that your wife has denied. You are claiming that Dr. Flores required mandatory selection of Foster and Steele. It would be expected that these players (especially the second highest scorer from last season) would make the team for their senior year. If Foster didn't make the team, it would have completely given the Fosters grounds to sue your wife or the district. Several team members have made outrageous comments about the Fosters, some people have anonymously made comments about your wife, you, Miss Foster, Miss Steele, Ed Foster, Lisa Foster, The Steeles, Alana, and several other bit players in this drama. None of it rises to the very difficult to prove level of defamation of character. Almost all of the statements made in the comments I have read are "opinions" and free speech allows opinions, even malicious opinions, to be heard. Very few statements of fact have been made here. It was the opinion of the Fosters that your wife discriminated against their daughter on religious grounds (We believe the coach is harassing our daughter, we believe that the coach is discriminating against her because she is Catholic and attends confirmation class..." The Fosters made allegations - not statements of facts. Defamation of character demands at minimum a statement of fact.

I have followed this whole story with sadness and at times amusement; knowing that it was blown out of proportion from the start. I never considered that there might be some truth to the religious discrimination angle until yesterday when you wrote the following:

We live our lives as an open book, what you see is what you get, no secrets, no pretention, we are just your normal, God fearing, bible thumping, gun toting, conservative republicans who believe that right is right and wrong is wrong, a matter of virtues, handed down by God and not subjective to your individual wants or desires.

That statement, while fine as a moral statement of your lifestyle, is just epically stupid when it comes to this matter. To publically announce that actually severely hurts your wife's credibility as a coach. I don't know if the Fosters and Steeles are "bible thumpers" or not, but you made it clear the kind of people you like. You are very black and white; we get it already. The problem is your wife was working for a PUBLIC high school. What chance would an Eastern Orthodox, B'hai, Hindu, Jewish, Muslim, or atheist player have of making the team with your wife as coach. I won't even venture to ask about a lesbian basketball player (there have been several high profile lesbian basketball players - Sheryl Swoopes comes to mind.)

I have no doubt having read your responses in the past couple of months that you will now either fly off the handle with me or try to convert me. I have felt nothing but sympathy for all involved in this matter as I don't know any of the people involved. I look at this as a very unfortunate incident. I believe everyone needs to take a breath and let this issue rest. As for the new coach, I wish him all the luck in the world. I have no doubt that many of the team members were very close to your wife and family. I am sure several are devastated. I am hoping that these players get some help so that they can move forward now that your wife will not be their coach.

The Bible doesn't say that Christians cannot sue...it "suggests" that Christians not sue each other, due to the affect it may have on ministering to the non-believers. How does it look to non-believers when Christians are sueing each other. I think Susan should sue not only the Foster and Steel families, she should sue the district as well.

    SpeakingDown,

Some of you are taking bits and pieces of separate articles and mixing them up. Regardless, my opinion or comments are my own, I do not speak for Susan and she does not speak for me. Had Susan listened to me she would have cut both these kids last year, they were a distraction and a disappointment, they were un motivated, un disciplined and detrimental to the morale of the team. That was my opinion last year and it is still my opinion. Regardless of my suggestion Susan kept both of them, had she dumped them we wouldn’t be going through this. I am not bound by anyone to keep my opinions to myself, nor will I, regardless of who it may offend. I have not lied or disrespected anyone on this blog or in the paper. Am I not allowed to speak, air my frustrations? I have a reason to be angry, what’s yours? You, only know what you read, in the paper or in the blog, which are both rife with error. It would be nice to talk to someone who has their facts straight. Someone that could speak intelligently about what actually happened, instead of people like you that speak without thinking, creating a stir to entertain or fill some empty void in their life. That’s how I feel and with the coach already moving on to bigger and better things, this has just become a waste of my time, and without speaking to someone who has the nerve to use their real name, I may as well be speaking to a dog. I have made my point and I am done. If you have and more questions or comments I suggest that you stop me on the street and ask me face to face, and I promise I will do the same. Goodbye.

    Gary,

After the comments you have made on this blog, If I was your wife, I would slap you. You would be thumping your bible in the garage. Why would you suggest to the coach, that she should cut Lindsey and Laura? These blogers have been teeing off on the wrong person! Gary is to blame!

Here is a bit more I believe the Fosters and Steeles have breached the peace that once remained. Ms. Shapiro's contract was verbally and via emailed re-newed...do not cast anymore negative aspersions against Ms. Shapiro:

The fighting words doctrine, in United States constitutional law, is a limitation to freedom of speech as granted in the First Amendment to the United States Constitution. In its 9-0 decision, Chaplinsky v. New Hampshire (1942), the U.S. Supreme Court established the doctrine and held that "insulting or 'fighting words,' those that by their very utterance inflict injury or tend to incite an immediate breach of the peace" are among the "well-defined and narrowly limited classes of speech [which] the prevention and punishment of...have never been thought to raise any constitutional problem."
  • SpeakingUp · 4 months ago
I am not casting negative aspersions on Ms. Shapiro. I don't know her, and she certainly has a lot of supporters.

I have spoken to the two lawyers I work with about this case in the last week. Both concur that there is very little chance that the coach would prevail in court. Since Ms. Shapiro serves at the pleasure of the district, I highly doubt that Superintendent Flores verbally and via-email renewed her contract. If Jack Daley or someone else did that, they were likely not in a position to offer her a renewal of her contract. Even if Flores had renewed the contract, at-will employees may be let go at any time for any reason.

School districts have mechanisms in place for parents to file formal complaints; this is what the Fosters and the Steeles did. They did not insult the Coach in public, they filed a complaint alleging what they perceived to be harrassing and belittling behavior by the coach. Breach of the peace assumes there existed a peace; clearly this was not the case as three separate complaints were filed by two families.

Coach Shapiro meanwhile, publically insulted the Fosters in a Dispatch interview in June:
"I treat the kids fair across the board. The Fosters just couldn't deal with the fact their daughter wasn't the star of the team," she said. This statement could certainly be construed as slandering the Fosters.

My point, which obviously you didn't get, was that Gary Cates is making things much worse for his wife. I sympathize with her. Had all of these people sat down and talked reasonably several months ago, there differences might have been worked out and we would not have had this very demeaning public display. There were no winners in this situation.
  • Basketball 2009 Parent · 4 months ago
    Hey Speaking Up,
You are overboard with your comment about the Coach pubicly insulted anyone. The statement that the Fosters must be upset over the fact that Lindsey was not a star. That is not a false statement. They even called the sports writer and asked him to write more about their daughter. They were very vocal to every parent about how they were upset that Lindsey was not the center of attention. My own wife was cornered by this woman and expressed how she hated the coach now for not starting her daughter. The coach was just making the assumption that everyone else involved already knew. What other reason would the coach have to believe since they just had lunch together the day before her first non-starting or captain vote or whatever? For God sakes what is wrong with you people? They were friends. The coach always spoke highly of Ed Foster always stuck up for the way he treated his daughter. This is because many of us thought he put way too much pressure on her. This coach never bad mouthed them at all. She even went against her own husband and the rest of the coaching staff who never wanted to see Lindsey in the game again. This coach always did what was best for the team. I agree with the lawyer there is so much more to this case than what you people on here know. Coach Shapiro did her job.
  • Lawyer Not Para Legal · 4 months ago
Ms. Shapiro is just as protected about her opinion as the Fosters are.
As far as peace there was peace as can be introduced into evidence via 32 e mails between the coach and the Fosters and Steeles up until the night of the captain vote. Furthermore, Ms. Shapiro continued her duties as Head Coach from the end of the season till her letter from the district. As exampled by 12 duties she was assigned to complete and she did complete. The Athletic Director is within his capacity to negotiate coaches that work for his school. It is well within his scope of duties as exampled by the same email to 4 other coaches presently at GHS that have come forward. All lawyers see things differently as exampled by the Fosters Lawyer for pushing this case to where it is today. In conclusion you or your lawyer firm do not have all the facts or evidence. Mrs. Foster acknowledged via email to Ms. Shapiro the request for a practice schedule change. This request was granted and appreciated by Mrs. Foster proof is in the email correspondence back and forth and the Athletic Director copied on everything. Mrs. Foster knew before she made the discrimination complaint based on religion that it was a false accusation. That is where one of the problems is. You cannot make accusations against someone who you know are false and damage their reputation.

Just another way to view the same situation

This whole business with the coach is only making public what has been know privately for quite some time and that is that the most obnoxious parents and students are in control of the educational system. The teachers have been put on notice to dumb things down for the sake of keeping the parents happy.

Someone should ask the question: "What happens when administration attempts to discipline a child of an outspoken school board member? How does that school board member react? How did the child respond? Threaten?" These are the questions to ask. Is discipline allowed at all at GHS? The answer is no. The employees at GHS are blamed for the actions of children. Parents are rarely appreciative and normally are rude and obnoxious. That behavior is rewarded by the school board and the superintendent as now everybody can clearly see.

Threaten a teacher or coach. Falsely accuse them? You WIN!!! The teacher or coach will be fired, credential pulled and publicly humiliated in the Dispatch.

The school board and the district office don't have the backbone to even defend their own policies. They leave teachers and coaches twisting in the wind. This is a known entity now and all pretenses are now gone. The downward spiral of GHS is now in overdrive.
  • gonefishing · 4 months ago
You should stay off this topic - I believe I know the incident you are referencing. I believe the students involved are now working with the ACLU. I used to be at that school, so I know just how these things can play out.

The truth is (although no one at GHS will have the cajones to admit it) that if you are the child of a school board member, you get targeted more than the average kid. I've seen it firsthand and heard comments about parents I couldn't repeat here.

You'd think that the Supreme Courts recent ruling on illegal searches of school children would be a wakeup call. GHS continues to conduct illegal searches for drugs of students for absolutely no good reason (using profanity as a reason to search for drugs, are you kidding me, they'd be searching the teachers than as well).

GHS has overstepped it's bounds with several students over the last few years. I expect it is frustrating to teachers and administrators when a student who knows their civil rights are being violated actually fights back. I applaud students like these for standing up for their rights.
  • Nathan H. · 4 months ago
With an attitude like yours, society should just stick a fork in education and let the cursing, threatening, pot smoking children take over the schools.

With the ACLU, Supreme Court and GUSD school board all attacking administration for trying to weed out week, then I guess they should just let the kids toke it up and do what they want.
  • matt · 4 months ago
Nathan you missed the point by a mile - you need to have a reason search someone for drugs in this country, even in a school. There has to be some compelling reason to infringe upon a person and their property. Cursing or swearing is not an indication of drug use, in a high school it is indicative of nothing suspicious at all. I know lots of kids who curse and don't do any drugs. If I curse at a bad driver on the highway does that give anyone the right to assume I am on drugs or hiding drugs?

I know about the incident brought up by some loser GHS official. The ACLU is involved because two kids were brought in to the office for using profanity while singing and playing guitar. I saw the yotube video of it. They got dragged to the office and grilled about drugs (for singing curse words - WTF???) Then the students and their possesions were searched for drugs. One of the kids specifically said he would not consent to the illegal search and he was searched anyway. He told me that he begged them not to do an illegal search. They restrained him and did the search, he warned the administrator that they would be sorry (he knew his civil rights were being violated and planned to take action). Of course no drugs were found because the kid doesn't do drugs. He called the ACLU and they are working with him.

So the parents of those kids were angry - who wouldn't be? I don't have kids yet, but I was pissed just hearing the story from one of the kids it happened to.

If GHS really wants to weed out drugs, they should go after kids who exhibit some signs of using drugs. No one at GHS has the right to search a student and their property without some kind of reasonable suspicion. GHS totally screwed up here - and of course being GHS administrators, they think its ok to go on and blog about it even though they were dead wrong. Idiots on a power trip....

So I wanted to touch on this subject. I am a college recruiter and I was in San Diego this past weekend. I watched some of these girls in question from this local high school team. I am not impressed. I am shocked that any parents think they will get anywhere with colleges for their kids with what they have done in this town. We all compare notes and talk. The one thing we spoke of was this situation. Your coach, or your now ex-coach did a great job. I was privy to some very good coaching video that she was involved in. Coach Shapiro did a good job. I am simply in awe of what was allowed to happen here.
Just in case the families of these two girls read this; as a college coach I spoke to Coach Shapiro who was very brief, and I respect her more now because she was very politically correct. I know she is now working as a recruiter for colleges and I cannot believe how you as parents did not foresee how this action you took damaged any chance your children had.

Coach Shapiro is running a Progressive Basketball Class that will enable ball players to get into college I suggest you make your amends and get your kids in this program. Lastly there GPA needs to be a 3.5 overall to receive any attention. They should be in summer school bringing up the one thing that will take both of them further than basketball ever will.

    Carlisle,

You are and absolute idiot! First of all, one would have to value your opinion before anyone could respect it. Your comments are weak and un supported. Do you honestly think that the issues in this case could be detected on a game film? The issues in this case have nothing at all to do with talent, or playing time. Those allegations are nothing more than a smoke screen to hide the real facts. Second, do you think that anyone could give an acurate assesement of a coach from a game film? That is totally obsurd. Did she walk up and down the court? Did she scratch her head two times? Did she cross her legs before halftime? I mean come on! What could a coach possibly do on a game film to impress you? Bobby Knight is a great basketball coach, but would he be a good high school coach? Hell No! These are kids! You obviously have little experience and your desires are only to support the coach. If you support the coach than just say so. Don't insult our intelligence with your "picked out of the air" facts.
  • what's good · 4 months ago
I am always suspicious when I hear someone referring to the job of "college recruiter". That's not even a real job. Usually, there is an assistant coach (or even the head coach in small programs) who is in charge of recruiting. Thus, the job title is "assistant coach", not "college recruiter". Why would any reputable college program have someone not on staff do their recruiting for them? College basketball recruiting is a shady business, even in women's basketball.
  • you @#$%! · 4 months ago
    JIM,

How do you know that Bobby knight was a good basketball coach, did you know him personally, no, you didn’t, you only believe that he was a good coach because you watched him on TV and read of his successes. Yes film of both players and coaches are immensely valuable in understanding a coach’s methodology and assessing a player’s strengths and weaknesses. I can tell you that the coaching community in California is smaller than you may think, and the coaching community at the college level, especially in division 1-2-3 is even smaller. This is not the first coach to go through this type of issues; actually, most coaches face this at some point in their career. The goal is to learn from it and grow, learn to spot these types of players and parents before they are part of the team and then keep them far away. I don’t know what type of basketball experience you have, but you obviously have no understanding of the game and for someone who professes to be “Bobby Knight”, yes I saw that that was one of your many names, you should be embarrassed. If Bobby Knight read your comments he would break his foot off in you butt!

One thing I do know, is that colleges are not any different than any pro team or person. They are always motivated by greed. Who is going to put up the numbers, who is going to win us championships, and who is going to sell tickets. Its always about economics.
So you are going to go ahead and tell me that a program is going to put a lot of emphasis on a particular players parents? If you are affiliated with a college, I am sure you are aware of all the colleges who have violated NCAA rules to lure athletes. I am and advocate of academics for sure, but how many exceptions are made for athletes who are challenged adademically? Oh, and how about Dennis Rodman? Did he have good parents? Again I'm not saying academics are not important, but it truly is about the numbers, and who is going to help make the program a success. A bad coach could be a greater hinderance than an unrully parent, in a program. The administrators don't look in the stands when the program lags. I am sure over time that Dr. Flores descision will resinate in the community, and by and large, the general consensus will be that she did the right thing.
  • Carlisle · 4 months ago
In women’s sports it is all about academics at the Division 2 and 3 levels. There are less than half of percent of those kids graduating next year that will have the skill set to move onto Division 1 basketball. In division 1 basketball there are exceptions for the truly gifted talent. The most talented ball player in California was drafted to play for UCONN this past year. She is an amazing talent with a 4.0. I do not know your relationship to the Foster or Steele kid but NO college at the Division 1 level will make any exceptions for either of these two girls. Whoever this is speaking, watch the girls being taken by colleges and than go to a GHS game, no comparison. There is no room for complaining parents and disruptions at this level. Jim I have been an active recruiter for years and most head coaches want complacency not headaches.

This community is the most unaware I have seen in a long time. I am a college recruiter the other name for it when you are associated with a college team is assistant. I have met Coach Shapiro on the road this summer most recently at a event for basketball talent. She is absolutely involved now at the college level. I saw these two troubled ball players as well this summer. They will be at the Junior College level and that is it if that. I have spoken to many Junior Colleges in this area and no one wants kids in their program with parents like that. Jim whoever you are you are out of touch.
  • Carlisle · 4 months ago
To this community whoever happens to know Jims real identity remove electronic devices from him. I am an assistant coach at the college level. I will not recruit either of these two kids. There GPA is below par and coaches at my level do not deal with troubled parents. Your coach I do not know her personally I have seen her coach on video and now live from a summer session in Colorado. She is the real deal. You people have no idea what you are speaking about with regards to college or what it takes to make it. We look for the whole package and unfortunately the parents are a part of that process.

Ok so who cares about Lindsey Foster and Laura Steele I played at the Junior College level even at that level their behavior off the court will prevent that. Check out their myspace accounts, which if you are a college recruiter that is exactly where you begin to see the real kid. The next step is their GPA both these girls our well below a 3.0. So with all that, all you have left is skill and that is laughable. You two ball players could not shoot your way out of a paper bag. Most importantly I have not only watched you played but spoken to current players they have stated over and over again you will only get what you get because your parents have a lawyer. It will never be because you earned it
As for Coach Jones I was the kid you broke down in the locker room. I was the kid who you thrashed upon. I have a degree and a great paying job and from what I looked up you have worked at walmart, pizza places, and you are a teacher. You are some drifter who can not maintain a stable residence; so really what example can you really set? These girls will run you or at least the Fosters will. What a shame for the program.

Everyone seems to think that this was and easy thing for the Fosters to do. The fact is, it was a very difficult thing for them. The Fosters are good people. It would have been easy for them to just let this whole thing go, to let someone else have to deal with it later. They chose to act on their consience, and do the morally correct thing. Now, Lindsey, and Laura have to deal with practically this whole town and their vengeful attitudes. It really is quite sad. In reality those two girls are the kindest, sweetest girls around.
I really hope that these girls, and the shapiros, can over come their bitterness. I have never before seen so much hate. Please girls, reach out to your two teamates. Be friends! You girls have not even played for him and your already trashing him. Show some good spirited respect. Give him a chance
  • Rorschach · 4 months ago
What are you talking about? The coach showed no bitterness at all. She was the one trashed by the idiot parents. Oh please, don't give me this 'acting on conscience' stuff. They got a superior coach FIRED because they are vindictive hateful people.

The girls are just as guilty. The parents are losers, but are supported by Apuzzo who has a track record of trashing teachers and harassing over grades. That is how Apuzzo got elected... trashing teachers.
  • Mary · 4 months ago
I recently retired from many years teaching in GUSD. Mrs Apuzzo is a board member who listens to teachers - I have even called on her since retiring. She was very generous with her time volunteering in our school and I have no reason to believe she started denigrating teachers after being such a supportive parent.

You sound like one very angry teacher - the klnd that gives the majority of good teachers a bad name.
  • Bill Pruthers · 4 months ago
The problem with you and your generation is that you failed miserably in preparing the students for high school. You did the self esteem thing with the kiddies and just gave parents what they wanted and told parents what they wanted to hear instead of what they needed to know.

Numerous parents that cry out for higher standards have attacked and rampaged teachers at the high school. Ask the math teachers how they feel about 'certain parents." You should ask administration how they feel after this last year.
  • GETAGRIP · 4 months ago
Which Math teacher is complaining at GHS - The one that got fired from Morgan Hill and has been failing miserably in GUSD for years now? The same one who did a one year stint at the Early College Program and got booted from there? The 400 pound teacher who seems to be chronically ill (no wondering why on that one) who many parents have complained about for years - what kind of an example is he to the students and parents? The Geometry teacher who seems to know nothing about Geometry and spent her time agonizing over personal problems when she was supposed to be teaching? Maybe the GHS Math teacher who is in jail now for having sex with a teenager....Jeez I wonder why the parents would want to complain about any of these characters.

I have had two students graduate from GHS and in their combined seven years of taking Math at GHS they had one good Math teacher (Silver?) and one decent Math teacher (Santos?). Every other Math teacher they had were just terrible teachers who didn't know Math.

I am an engineer, so I was able to help my kids, but I have to tell you, I resent paying taxes which are supposed to be used to hire someone to teach my kids Math and then having these people get paid and not be able to teach Math. I have no doubt that these incompetent teachers complained about me, because I sure complained about them.
  • George · 4 months ago
Maybe they can spend your tax dollars on a Fat Camp for these lazy teachers? Are you an idiot? Now you are questioning someone’s character because they are fat. You are a real class (less) act.
  • What? · 4 months ago
"Getagrip" also lied about a teacher that he mentions. Getagrip comes from the circle of board member friends that teach their children to be obnoxious to administrators and teachers.

    The truth is known.
  • GETAGRIP · 4 months ago
My kids graduated a few years ago so I don't remember the name of the one really good Math teacher after 5 years. I believe it was Ms. Silver. I never thought I would need to remember her name, I just appreciated the fact that she knew her Math and my kids learned under her.

My kids didn't hate or disrespect their teachers, they just had some bad ones at the high school. There were teachers who showed Disney videos in class, teachers who didn't know how to teach proofs. Having had some very good teachers at Luigi and Brownell, my wife and I could spot a weak teacher once our kids got to GHS.

This response is so typical of the teachers union - defend the membership all at any cost. Blame the poor teaching results on the parents, the students, the school board. Preach personal responsibility for everyone but yourselves.

By the way, I am not friends with anyone on the school board or in the school district - I just know what I read in the papers and see when I catch the meetings on cable. I voted for Good, Bress, Apuzzo, Aguirre and Bundros and they are all doing a good job.

While watching the board meetings last year, I saw that the school district instituted a wellness policy. Don't you think a morbidly obese teacher should get on board with that? What kind of a role model is that for students? My daughter used to feel physically ill around him - he would be eating in class while the kids were working.

And please tell - what teacher did I lie about? The one now in jail? The Math teacher who got fired from MH and then booted from the Early College? My neighbors kid went to that Gavilan program and had to suffer that fool. The only mistake made after kicking him out of the Early College after a year was they apparently let him go back to GHS (ahh tenure). The teacher who brought her personal family drama into the classroom every day? I actually feel sorry for her - my kids thought she was a nice person, she just didn't know how to teach Geometry. My son learned more about her family then he did about Geometry. I taught him that year, and he succeeded by me tutoring him. His friends were not so fortunate, as their parents weren't engineers or Math majors. Several went to private tutoring, some had to go to summer school.

I have had the opportunity to meet several wonderful Math teachers over the last three years (my son's roommate is the son of one of them). Most GHS teachers couldn't get an interview to clean the bathrooms in Saratoga or Los Altos.

    Get over yourselves already
  • know ya · 4 months ago
You get a grip FOSTER..Yes we all know that this is you.
  • GETAGRIP · 4 months ago
I wouldn't know Mr Foster if he was standing right next to me. My son is about to graduate college and my daughter will be transferring to UCSD in September.

It is very obvious to me that some teachers (likely the same ones I wrote about) spend their time on this blog defending the indefensible. I remember the old principal (Bravo) avoiding me when my wife and I went to talk with him about two different Math teachers that were just abysmal. I have no doubt he complained about us, GHS has a long tradition of complaining about parents who have certain expectations of the teachers.
We had those expectations because we had good teachers, including good Math teachers, through middle school. The wheels came off the bus at GHS. Instead of fixing the problem, or getting rid of ineffective and incompetent teachers, GHS just shuffles them around, ignores the problem, and blames the kids and/or the parents who complain. At the end of the day, the facts speak for themselves - the reason so many GHS kids who performed well in their previous schools and perform well in every other subject in high school are not doing well in Math is because GHS has very weak Math teachers.

My understanding of this basketball situation is that the superintendent chose not to rehire this coach - I don't think the school board even votes on matters like this or the hiring of the new baseball coach. Coach Shapiro has moved on with her life, but these bitter teachers are still looking for a forum to rant about the school district, school board, parents, students, etc... They try to hold everyone else accountable except themselves.

And to make my point, one of the Math teachers (jonekin) writes here that he would have transferred his own daughter out of his class. Did you tell the parents of those kids who were losing instruction (because of the kids who didn't want to learn) to transfer their kids to another class? Did you tell the kids themselves to find a class that would meet their needs? No, instead you let them lose out on learning. You deprived them of what they needed and now you admit you didn't do right by them. I thank God my kids are done with all that.
  • What? · 4 months ago
Ha. You don't even know the name of the person that you actually liked and all you are is full of hatred for those in the math department and you obviously don't know a thing that you are talking about. You are a typical hater and have taught your children to hate and disrespect the math teachers. How are the math teachers supposed to teach when bigots like you teach them to hate?

People like you set up an antagonistic relationship. You and your children create the cancerous atmosphere that undermines education. The loudmouths are all guilty of the same hate mongering. None of them have helped out a day in their lives to actually help the math department or to actually find out the facts about what is going on. And you wonder why so many pack their bags voluntarily and get out?
  • George · 4 months ago
Usually when a parent has a problem with the teacher, it is due to a failure and a breakdown in communication. Parents need to parent and teachers need to teach (just as coaches need to coach). Know your role.
  • GETAGRIP · 4 months ago
That's the problem - I am not paid by GUSD to teach Math and yet I found myself having to because GHS Math teachers are so inferior to those in other parts of Santa Clara County.

I did my job as a parent - my wife and I prepared my kids. The teachers they had in grade school and middle school prepared my kids. They were well rounded, worked hard and played by the rules. I never complained about a teacher until they got to the high school, and then it was a yearly disappointment with the Math teachers. My son is at UC now, having graduated with honors from GHS and he was far behind his peers in Math
(not everything else - just Math.)

I am singling out Math teachers at GHS because his other teachers (AP and honors teachers in English and History, all his teachers in Science, his Photography, Music and Spanish teachers) were so much better than the Math teachers.

My complaint is the Math teachers at GHS, many of whom are not doing what they are being paid to do. No communicating was going to make a lazy Math teacher stop losing my kids work. No communicating was going to make a woman who cries in class about personal problems suddenly learn how to teach Geometry. No communicating was going to help the boorish loudmouth who enjoyed dissecting the opinions of the columnist from local paper get my son through AP Statistics.

I am a GHS Alum, and am currently an elementary school teacher. I will say that my experience with the math department at GHS was below average. One teacher in particular (who is still there!!) used to give us a worksheet or a couple problems on the board to work on-- and then he would play games on his computer the rest of the period. We all knew he did it, and complained. With the help of my father, I was able to leave his class at the semester and had a great teacher the remainder of the year- Santos. As far as the teacher who "didn't teach"-- it is very sad to see this man is still teaching at GHS, or rather "not teaching". GHS administration needs to open their eyes.
  • Jonekin · 4 months ago
I taught math last year. A lot of kids didn't get enough instruction because of interventions I had to go through with kids who just wouldn't do their work...or decided that they would rather be a clown. I felt bad for the kids who were being robbed of instruction time by self-centered future street corner beggers. If my daughter was in one of my classes, I would have demanded my kid be switched to a new class as well...but not because of the teacher.

    Mary,

Don't pay any attention to Rorschash. "Rorschash" is really Jonekin, who couldn't keep any kind of order in the classroom, and has a personal vendetta against the whole system. Jonekin doesn't take any responsibility, and everything that went wrong, was everyone elses fault.
  • Jonekin · 4 months ago
Actually, I am not Rorschach...and I'm giving teaching one last shot. I start in two weeks and hopefully things will go better than this past year. And by the way, I got great reviews during my observations last year. I was just given the "worst-of-the-worst" classes of the entire department last year. It's disheartening when you are having to spend a large portion of your time trying to motivate kids to just apply pencil to paper when there are other kids in the same class who actually need and want help...but the district sees the kids who lack motivation (or let's say it's 'refusal to do work') as just as much deserving of my time as the kids who want to succeed and need my help. Ration-Al , stop being an immature sack of potatoes.

I am a good friend of Susan Shapiro. This blog needs to stop. While you people are bickering back and forth she and her family have been on vacation and enjoying a beautiful summer. She is working for a college on contract for the west coast region. In all honesty she does not harbor any ill will toward Lindsey, Laura or their parents. She has moved on. Can you all just understand that as much as she loved these girls this is just life? She is at peace with this you all need to move ahead with your lives and find something better to do. She remains assisting those that have contacted her with their futures in Basketball and/or college aspirations. Those that do not want her help that is fine.
Yes I am speaking on her behalf but I feel it is about time someone did.

If you folks are interested in a more user-friendly forum to discuss this, maybe you should go to http://mbaypreps.com/ and click on "Message Board". There is a girls' basketball forum that hasn't seen much traffic since the season ended.

I spoke to the reporter at the National News Paper Sports, this sounds like it is a big story on Athletics in High School and how negative influences are costing kids millions in scholarships. His name is Rick Santos and his extension is 4200. Apparently they also run a sports blog, which I couldn’t figure out how to access. He said that the article is posting in several National papers on Thursday, including USA Today. I hear that he interviewed the coach, and that she is heavily favored in the article. I told him how awesome the team was last year in spite of the two trouble makers and that the team has several key players that they should feature on the positive side as what can happen when players have great parents. Apparently that was the general consensus.
  • Magi · 4 months ago
The number given here is a scam as most toll-free numbers are. There is no National News Paper Sports. When you call the number, there is an automated voice that says "Newspaper Information Services." I was able to ascertain that this is a clearinghouse for any nut who wants to be heard... I eagerly await the delivery of USA today on Thursday with a featured story on the GHS girls basketball team - LMAO!!!!
  • Nancy · 4 months ago
I just listened and saw this as well. Great for the coach and letting people know where Gilroy is. I am not too sure this is what the Fosters or Steeles wanted for their daughters. I want to say again how professional I believe Coach Shapiro was in the article on the blog and in comments I heard. The coach really is above board. As a parent I feel bad for those girls for what their parents did to them.
  • What? · 4 months ago
It is time to get your child away from GUSD if you really care about their character and education. The school board and district office have made it very clear that teachers must hand out passing grades to students that don't do their work and give preferential treatment to student players that don't show up for practice as long as they have connections.

Most of the parents in the city are awesome, but the few that complain are leading the district down. Gang influence is on the increase and teachers are being fired if they defend themselves against gang members. Children of board members are empowered to shout at administration and teachers. The race card is played over and over again in order to influence grade inflation. Teachers are written up for not passing students that don't even attend school.

Keep in mind that the school board and superintendent FIRED a coach that was being harassed by parents and children even though the coach did EVERYTHING right... except to give in to harassment. GUSD defends children HARASSING teachers and coaches and will FIRE THE COACH OR TEACHER if they don't obey the children.

Get your children away from this district if you care anything at all about their character and education. Take out a loan to put them in private school or sell your home and rent if you must in a town north of Gilroy. GHS is being handed over to the thugs.
  • George · 4 months ago
I agree. Parents such as this need to start taking responsibility for their own failures, just because the Math Teacher failed your daughter, or your older kids had to repeat a few grades (of failed to graduate) doesn’t mean that the teachers are bad. Maybe you should look at your string of failures and wake up to the fact that it is your parenting that is to blame, not the system.
  • Friend · 4 months ago
I will re-post my earlier sentiments. This blog is a waste of time. The coach has moved on to the college level she is still dealing with the girls that are looking to move on. She has a real job that actually pays money. I explained to her over the phone what is going on with this and she is amazed that anyone still wants to speak negatively. Stop this it is insane. For those of you that believe you need to fight this battle for Coach Shapiro just cease. She will take care of the situation on her own if she so desires. If not she has been recognized for her talent it is unfortunate that so many of you the Steeles and Fosters harbor so much hatred in your heart. It is inconceivable not only to her but to the many supporters she has that you people are this evil in nature. You will never be happy and you will always seek to hurt others. Mr. Edward Foster you should be ashamed that you were unable to get a hold and control your wife better. You are not a leader of your family; you are a horrible example of a man. Ken Steele you do not get off the hook either you too are a weak man led by your wife on a leash.
The four of you have so much hatred but why don’t you spew that in private and not on here. If you are trying to hurt the Coach it is not working. She is stronger in mind and heart than the four of you put together. She has moved onto better things why can’t you?

I was able to contact the reporter on this story. He said that they have had over 100 comments in two days on this one incident alone. Apparently this is an ongoing “epidemic” in high school sports and that their story deals with several small towns in including several in Texas and Arizona. He said the story is scheduled to run on Thursday in several national papers, when it is posted I will send the link. Of course, yours truly will be quoted in the paper, as I have witnessed firsthand the problems with these specific parents and players.

Gilroy is breaking the rules again....The Field Hockey Team put Kaylanah Mah on the team. She does not live in Gilroy and is using a relatives address in Gilroy. her family lives in San Martin...I want to see what GHS does about this violation.

What is CCS doing about this?
  • straight up · 4 months ago
Be careful, we had a coach who recuited players, and had sleep overs for certain team members etc... and this particular coach is now considered by some to be a hero, and a martyr. And another thing if Marcos Sanchez, Deborah Flores, or Jack Daly did something to correct the situation, a good part of the town would meet a starbucks and want to start a revolt. Just look at how they conspired against the Fosters and Steeles.
  • District Office · 3 months ago
Rule breakers...............No one cares about the Fosters and the Steeles they are ridiculous human beings and that is more credit than they deserve....Kaylanah Mah after checking has her official home in San Martin...on LLagas what is the district going to do about that? The field hockey team has gone to CCS every year they will lose their season over this and so will basketball and whatever other sport she is in. She does not live in this district the address in Gilroy on Victoria is a relatives....get smart Gilroy this will hit the ccs office....Why is GHS unable to follow simple rules.
  • Jim · 3 months ago
    Excuse me,

It's not GHS, it's the coach. If you discipline the coach, who is doing the recruiting, the town of Gilroy will be in an uproar! Look at what happened to Coach Shapiro. No one wants the coach to be upheld to any kind of standard. If you do hold the coach accountable, the remaining parents of kids on the team go nuts. They see it as an opportunity to win favor, and sell out the player, or parents, who cried foul. I guess the answer is to put our heads in the sand and pretend that its not happening ,and then move on to let the following class deal with the same crap later.
  • Jim · 3 months ago
All I am saying is, 90% of this town would be ok with it, if Coach Shapiro was the one guilty of the recruiting.
  • Current Coach @GHS · 3 months ago
Jim, I coached with Shapiro she is really a good coach. You sound like you really have some deep hatred for her...what is your problem? Mah needs to get out GHS
  • Jim · 3 months ago
No, I have absolutely no hatred to her or anyone else. I just don't like the fact that a student or her family cannot voice their concernes to the proper authorities without getting blasted from teamates, teamates parents, and the media. This is a family, with a student who is trying to get an education. The coach is a bail bondsmen who coaches as a hobby. The effects of this situation are far more catastrophic for the student youth. Maybe because you are an educator you have lost site of this fact. However you should seek to rejuvinate your cause for teaching if you ever had one, rather than for just a paycheck. Mind your own business with respect to Mah if your not the coach.
  • History Teacher · 3 months ago
So Jim picks and chooses when he should be correct or honest. Oh poor Foster or Steele Kid but when a kid is breaking the rules of not only GHS but CCS and district violations than lets just leave poor Mah and her rule breaking family alone? I do not think so you do not get to pick and choose who gets to be fair and you obviously are spineless and lack any sense. This violation effects academic decathalon, choir programs, cheerleading, any program that competes for GHS would be adversley affected. Do you get it now Kaylanah Mah will have to transfer out of the school you moron.
  • Jim · 3 months ago
    Mr. History teacher,

I think it would serve you best to stay in the classroom and stick to history. As far as making any suggestions to you, regarding any of the extra curicular activities, I would not have any confidence in your abilities, based on your comments. Thank you sir
  • Fact Bringer · 3 months ago
Jim lets get something straight there is no burrying your head in the sand on this one. Kaylanah mah is an out of district student playing for GHS. CCS will do something about it. The teams will be sactioned and she will lose her eligibility. Come on GHS get your heads up and for once do the right thing.
  • Parent · 3 months ago
Where is the district or GHS weighing in on this? Has anyone at the paper called to check the status of this violation? I will not stand by and watch the Mah kid get away with this. Lisa Foster stated she was recruited to play at GHS and low and behold she is at GHS. Is she using the Steele or Foster address? Come on I am sick of everyone allowing dishonest people to win. Sit the Foster and Steele kid on the bench and get Kaylanah Mah to the right school.
